Robert Burns has submitted these images related to the service and death of his uncle, Percival Louis James Burns (Percy J Burns). Percy was born in 1913 and served with The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey). He died in service in India in 1938, possibly from an illness caused by ‘dust’ from marching.
The Burns family originated from London and lived in Camberley from before 1915 to the 1960s.
The images show construction working, the motto of the Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) and some relating to the cortege of Percy J Burns.

This is an album compiled by Charles Streatfeild James (1859-1937) and donated by Adam James.
Charles Streatfeild James was born in 1859, the first son of Herbert Henderson James of the 10th Bombay Native Infantry. Charles’ grandfather, Charles Butler James went to Bombay as a cadet in 1802 and served with the Bombay Army until his retirement in 1853. Four of his sons and many of their offspring  along with a variety of cousins all had India connections.
Charles was educated at Trinity School Stratford-upon-Avon and then at Coopers Hill Engineering College from 1877 to 1879. He was appointed to the Indian Telegraph Department in January 1879 and spent his working life in the Department, retiring as Director of Telegraphs for Oude and Agra. He married Elizabeth (Bessie) Ellen Mackenzie (1st May 1886), daughter of Nicholas William Mackenzie, a banker. They had two children, Dorothy Place James (died young) and Ralph James DSO who died in 1916 at Morval on the Western Front.
The photographs start in England around 1878 and then show Charles’ journey out to India via Palestine, Egypt and Colombo. Most are stock pictures, so he may not have visited Jerusalem. Then come a series of stock photos of Calcutta and some of railway bridges. He was based at Surat and Barrackpore  where he met and married Bessie Mackenzie. The album has several photographs of prominent government buildings, local views and family and social events.

This is an album of family “snaps” possibly belonging to the family of Sir Henry Proctor (1866 to 1928). Some are clearly taken in the UK and others show domestic life in India in the late 1890s through the early 1900s. The collection includes some unique material relating to the official opening of the Guzerat Railway, and also contains images of the engines and stations, and pictures of the construction process of the line.

Henry Edward Edleston Procter, born 13 April 1866, died 11 July 1928. He was the son of Charles Edward Proctor (1834 to 1873) a solicitor in Macclesfield and Ellen Livesey (about 1837 to 1882) of Fairfield, West Derby, Liverpool. He married his wife Helen Matilda Freeman (17 April 1877 to 5 July 1950) in Bombay on 23 February 1897. They had three children Margaret Helen, Katherine Joyce, and Arthur Francis.

Henry became a knight and a Companion of the British Empire in 1911 when serving as a Member of the Council of the Governor of Bombay for making Laws and Regulations. He was later President of the YMCA.

Photos supplied by Dianne Mitchell of the family of Cryil Preston and Phyllis Cronan (nee Heron), taken between 1916 and 1928 in Simla, Calcutta and East Africa. Cyril was an accountant with the Railway Board of India. He was conscripted to the Indian Army Reserve. He spent a year 1916-1917 in Dar-es-Salaam, East Africa as a non-combatant.

The souvenir album of Samuel Francis Lewis, Royal Engineers, covering the period 1875 to 1884. These are mostly images from Kirkee (Khadki), Poona (Pune) and Bombay (Mumbai) in western India. There are also some "field" photos from the North West Frontier and (perhaps) Afghanistan.

Lt. Col H.J.R. O'Brien was born in Nainital, India in 1906 where his father worked as a civil engineer. Educated at Bedford Public School, he entered Sandhurst and was commissioned in 1927 as a 2nd Lt in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Seconded to the 10th Baluch regt of the Indian Army. He saw active service in the Mahmond campaigning in the early 1930's. During the second world war, he served with the Royal Indian Army Service Corps. His last nine months of his Army career were with CRIASC, HQ South Burma, Rangoon. Discharged with the rank of Lt. Col on Indian Independence he returned to Ireland in 1948.

The photographs in this collection form a small but important part of the Eustace family archive. The majority of these images reflect the remarkable lives of three men: JCW Eustace CIE (1906-1972), Maj Gen AH Eustace CB, CBE, DSO (1863-1939) and Lt Col JPL Eustace MC (1898-1987).

The photographs in this collection were taken by Theophilus Anthony (Bhia) Metcalfe and his wife, Marie Metcalfe nee Ross. The pictures were taken between early 1900's and early 1950's. They present the Metcalfes' family and friends, as well as Bhia's colleagues from Calcutta Light Horse. Bhia was a high ranking officer in the British Indian army. Him and Marie enjoyed a very active social life among British and Indian Establishment. After leaving the army, Bhia worked as a tea trader, before retiring and settling in Australia. The collection currently belongs to the family of Jennifer Foye, nee Makin, who was Marie's niece.

A collection of photographs taken between 1942-1945 by Joseph Nicholson whilst serving in the Army during WWII. All the photographs were taken in India apart from five which were taken in Burma as the Allies returned to Burma to defeat the Japanese.
