This monument was originally placed over the well in the Bibigarh in Cawnpore into which the bodies of the massacred were thrown by the rebels. The Battle of Plassey took place on 23rd June 1757 between the forces of Siraj-ud-Daula, Nawab of Bengal and the British forces of Robert Clive (Clive of India), supported by those of Mir Jaffa who, after the battle, displaced Siraj as Nawab of Bengal. Clive extracted significant political and financial reward from Mir Jaffa and thereafter used his influence to establish a great political influence for the East India Company in India.
