Statue of Charles John Canning, Earl Canning, Governor-General and first Viceroy of India. Born 14 Dec. 1812 and died 17 June 1862. The Battle of Plassey took place on 23rd June 1757 between the forces of Siraj-ud-Daula, Nawab of Bengal and the British forces of Robert Clive (Clive of India), supported by those of Mir Jaffa who, after the battle, displaced Siraj as Nawab of Bengal. This monument was originally placed over the well in the Bibigarh in Cawnpore into which the bodies of the massacred were thrown by the rebels.
